JUNGLE BOOK... March - 2008

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Dear Friends,

The highlight of recent years has been our increasing focus on direct conservation projects, besides environment education activities. These efforts have borne results. The Gavier wetland conservation project has succeeded well with the protection. With an additional area now covered under this project, the wetland has expanded and additional patch is now fully protected. The trees on the periphery planted by our members and raised by our club have now grown to more than 10 feet and the results can be clearly seen by the increased number of waterfowl and species which are recorded here. Besides this, we are regularly organizing trips for school children to the Gavier wetland. We now plan to setup a Nature interpretation center here, which will aid our Nature education activities.

Annual General Meeting

Date: 15 March 2008

Place: Mahalaxmi Party plot, Behind ISCON mall

Time: 8:00 pm onwards

The second project we have initiated is Vulture protection project. For this project, we have setup a feeding site, where we regularly provide diclofenac free carcasses to vultures. An average of 45-50 vultures can be seen at our feeding site, on a given day. The reversal in population of vultures will take time – however, the population has now stabilized in our region, based on our regular surveys. This is a departure from rest of our country where vulture populations are already wiped out or are fast disappearing. We also plan to extend this project to Dang district, where the Long billed vultures are found.

Members are already aware of our efforts to substitute Diclofenac for veterinary medicines by subsidizing an alternative to it.

This third project, our club has proposed to set up a wild deer breeding center at the Nature Club site in Vansda National Park. We have received the formal permission from Forest department to go ahead with this project. Deer populations in Surat, Valsad and Dang districts in the forest regions are almost non-existent. We expect that raising deer and releasing them in wild at some stage, will bring about a more balanced wildlife in our forest regions. This coupled with education of local people, we expect will result in long term steady deer populations.

For this purpose, we will be constructing a large and a tall enclosure, over a spacious area, resembling the natural habitat. Besides this, we will be taking help of experts and field advisors, including full time personnel to run this project.

For this purpose, we require a sum of Rupees Fifteen lakhs, as seed money to start this project. So, dear members, please generously contribute to this project.
