Gavier Wetland Protection Project

Our club has adopted Gavier as this year's large scale project for bird life and wetland protection. Our organization had taken strong steps to protect this wetland from destruction a decade back.

Gavier lake is located 7 kms away from Surat city.  The lake has been regularly visited by winter migratory birds. Numerous bird species, including Shovellors, Coots, Pochards, Storks, Cranes, Jacanas, Moorhens are regularly feature during winter. The resident species are seen throughout the year.  There is also rich birdlife on the banks. This is also one of the lakes where otters are regularly seen. The lake is located at a short distance from the river and a shallow end and a grassland. Beyond the grassland is river Tapi, which has small mud flats and islets. Across the river, lies the Kribhco bird sanctuary.

Lately, there has been an increased disturbance, primarily from grazing cattle and people,  which our club felt was detrimental to the wetland.

Our organization decided to adopt this wetland. The following objectives were identified:

bulletProcure permission from government for conducting this conservation activity
bulletMinimize disturbance from cattle and people.
bulletThe number of visitors needs to be limited
bulletPrevent Poaching/Illegal fishing
bulletClear foreign/non-native plant species and replace them in progressive manner by native trees, suitable for roosting/nesting.
bulletCreate a sturdy/long life fence, which can last a duration of next 25 years, with single point restrict entry/exit for visitors.
bulletCreate watch tower for bird watchers.

Objectives Achieved

bulletThe necessary permissions were obtained.
bulletA fence around the lake, beyond the banks running into 1 kilometer is completed.
bulletProportion of non-native vegetation is reduced (not completely removed), and native trees are being planted.
bullet Pipes below the fences, which would allow otters to move into and out of the lake, but not allow cattle/goats to enter.

The club would like to thank Mr. Rajan Shah and Suzlon Ltd and our other numerous donors for their generous contributions to this project.
