DEER BREEDING PROJECT

Nature Club Surat jointly with Maharaja of Vansda Shri DigveerendraSinh are starting a new project of breeding ungulates at the Vansda National Park located in South Gujarat. The main aim of this project is breeding different types of deers and release them back in the wild.  The Leopard population is increasing in the wild in the Dangs, there are no herbivorous left so the leopards have now started moving out of the forest are in search of food. Looking to the current situation the Club has decided to take up this project.

This project can also help in reintroducing tigers to the forest of Gujarat (Tigers were found in the forest of South Gujarat until 15 yrs back).

This project has been approved by the Gujarat Forest Department. First time this type of project is being carried out by an NGO in India. Four varieties of ungulates namely Spotted Deer (Axis axis), Four horned antelope (Tetracerus quadricornis), Barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak) and Sambar Deer (Cervus unicolor) will be bred under this project. All these varieties were found earlier in this forest of Dangs.

Most of the Sanctuaries of our state contain very low numbers of herbivores. Unfortunately National Parks and Sanctuaries of South Gujarat do not have a high diversity of herbivorous animals, especially wild ungulates Due to that, these forests are unable to attract large number of tourists and it gives a negative impression to a layman. Hence such sort of project is required for a reintroduction of wild ungulates to encourage “Beautification of PAs and develop eco-tourism”.

Looking to the current situation the Nature Club Surat has decided to take up unique project of breeding ungulates to maintain eco-balance and improve the socio-economic upliftment of local community through ecotourism.

This project has been approved by the Gujarat Forest Department. First time this type of project is being carried out by an NGO in India.
