Mangrove Plantation Project

Nature Club Surat is an NGO, working for Environment Education, Animal Welfare and Adventure activities since 1985 in South Gujarat.  Nature Club Surat is also working on projects like Vulture conservation project, Wetland protection project, Deer Breeding project etc.

On 1st Aug, 2008 a survey was undertaken wherein we observed that the Tapi river bank below the causeway was suitable for the Mangrove plants. For the first phase, we selected Umra ovara (21 10’14.06” N, 72 46’32.84” E) at Tapi river bank for the Mangrove plantation. During the survey it was seen that there were two species of Mangrove plants found there. Out of which one was Sonaracia Apatala and the other Acanthus.

This project is initiated by Nature Club Surat with the help of Hazira LNG Pvt. Ltd. Members of Umra village development committee has also appreciated this activity and has joined hands for this noble cause.

Looking to the present situation we came to know that this place was a good grazing site for the cattle of the nearby area. To avoid them from coming and destroying the plantation the Club employed a full time employee who would guard this place and keep the cattle away from the plantation.
