World Environment Day with African Baobab Tree

As usual Nature Club Surat decided to celebrate World Environment day this year. Each year we decide on a subject which is relevant of the time. We were on look out for a suitable subject for the occasion. Surat is fast developing and beautification and widening of the road is part of it. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) over look the importance of trees while making the road wide. But the general public and NGOs in Surat are a motivated group. They take time and remind SMC on such matter.

It so happened that near to Adajan village the road was widening and two African Baobab (Adansonia digitata) came on the way of the road. These trees are more than 300 years old but the contractors were not interested to save these trees. So they decided to cut the trees. At the eleventh hour some of the locals came to know about it and they informed Nature Club Surat. The volunteers of nature club Surat and local youth formed protective circle around the trees and informed media and made paper works to different departments to stop the cutting. So we decided to take up a rally against the cutting, but before 5th June SMC decided to divert the road a little to save the trees. So on 5th June instead of protest, we decided to thank SMC. We made banners on the subject and wrapped the trees with it.

As the vacations were still on in schools, a press note was given in local news papers to invite people to come near the trees and celebrate the day with us. A painting competition on “Save the Trees” also organized under the same trees. 45 children from age group 4 to 14 took part in the competition. We also talked to the parents of children on the importance of the day and what environment meant to them. Prizes were distributed to different age group children.

Big 92.7 fm (a reliance group) gave media propaganda.
